Nabil Askafe Obituary – Shot to Death | Shooting at Jackson Square
VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN JACKSON SQUARE HOMICIDE
Hamilton Police have identified the victim in Friday’s shooting at Jackson Square as 16-year-old Nabil Askafe. Investigators say officers were called to the mall at approximately 5:10 p.m., where they located Askafe suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Police report the incident began with a brief interaction near King & Hess that escalated into a physical altercation inside the mall. A 14-year-old suspect, believed to be the only individual armed, allegedly produced a concealed firearm and opened fire near the King Street entrance.
Askafe reportedly moved further inside the mall before collapsing, where he was later found by first responders.
Two male suspects were seen fleeing eastbound toward James Street. Police are actively searching for the 14-year-old suspect, who is facing a second-degree murder charge and has been urged to turn himself in. Investigators are still working to identify the second individual.
Authorities confirmed that Askafe was unarmed. His family had recently immigrated to Canada from Syria.
Police are now seeking judicial approval to release the suspect’s name and photo. Anyone with information is asked to contact Hamilton Police at 905-546-3825.
