The Texas A&M University–Texarkana community is mourning the tragic loss of Graycen Vargo, a student-athlete who passed away after collapsing during a track and field competition in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Vargo, a junior from Dallas, Texas, suffered a medical emergency on Friday evening while competing in the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Xavier University. Officials confirmed that he collapsed during his event and was given immediate medical attention on-site before being transported to a nearby hospital. Despite all efforts, he was later pronounced deceased.

Graycen was in his first year with the Eagles after transferring from Jacksonville College. He was pursuing a degree in computer science and competed in both cross country and track and field. In his short time with the program, he made a lasting impression on teammates and coaches alike.

University officials described him as a dedicated athlete, a committed student, and a respected member of the campus community. He had recently been honored with the Eagle Excellence Award for Cross Country, reflecting both his work ethic and character.

The university has expressed its deepest condolences to Graycen’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches. Counseling and support services have been made available to students and staff as they process this sudden and heartbreaking loss.

The cause of his death has not yet been released.
